PROTECT WHAT’S IN YOUR BASEMENT…
Accumulated water in a basement can cause significant damage. Think of all the valuable items that are typically in
one’s basement, heating equipment, water heater, electrical panel, washer/dryer, etc. Over the last few weeks, we
have seen devastating damage caused by frozen, burst pipes that, by the time it was discovered, had already filled
the basement and caused thousands of dollars in damage.
Installation of a sump pit and pump is one way to keep the basement from filling with water. In the lowest point in
the basement, a pit is dug out and a plastic sump pit is installed. A pump is placed within that pit, and is connected
to a discharge line. If water begins to accumulate, the rising water level will trigger the float on the pump, and the
pump will continue to pump the water out through the discharge line until the water level is reduced to a
manageable level.
This set up is also good protection against homes built in areas with high water tables, and those that are prone to
foundation leaks after heavy rains, or large snow melts.
